Paradise are hybrid glass sculptures created to evoke escapism.
Hand crafted from mouth blown and kiln-formed glass, these unique pieces depict all things tropical and alluring - lush vegetation, crystal clear waters, exotic flora, coral, feathers etc.
Mouth blown cylinders form the basis of each piece. The carefully selected bespoke palette is built in response to each individual cylinder colour. The decorative kiln-formed finials act as glass ‘paintings’ composed across multiple firings and coldwork. The meticulous layering, fusing and placement of glass colour forming unique patterns.
These elements are then selected and positioned with the same level of consideration to create a three dimensional composition of colour, whereby one section of glass overlays another. Supported by the hand blown minimalist cylindrical construction which, depending on rotation, allows a shift in form and composition.
Amy Cushing’s principal source of inspiration is colour and the language it conveys. Her work is often material and process led, abstract and site-specific. It sits within the intersection of art, design, and high-end craft.
Multi-disciplinary trained in Public Art at Chelsea School of Art, Amy studied large-scale drawing, painting and all 3D disciplines specialising in ceramic and glass.
Amy’s studio practice specialises in colour sequence and balance, the energy of her palette meticulously considered. For 25 years Amy has experimented with hot and cold glass, recording results and building a portfolio of techniques. She crosses over from kiln-formed art to free blown glass work, often collaborating with master blowers both in the UK and Venice, Italy.
Amy has extensive knowledge of the technical and aesthetic compatibility of glass colours. Their transformation from cold to hot, and hot to cold is dramatic, so her experience is well documented with decades of tests, samples and a highly trained eye.
Her signature suspended installations weave colour with mesmerising effect creating layered compositions. These delicate non-static artworks float with an ethereal beauty capturing and reflecting diaphanous qualities. More recent hybrid Paradise sculptures encapsulate years of experimental techniques; unique forms combined with an ability to almost paint with glass colours, creating one-off collectible pieces.
As an established artist, Amy has a reputation for liaising well with clients completing successful projects in many sectors; corporate, commercial, healthcare, gallery and residential.
