Based Upon is reflecting on a new direction in piano design with the debut of its latest digital instrument, Twist/D. As an artist’s exploration into the synthesis of form, function and experience, Twist/D combines a sculptural aesthetic based on divine proportions with capabilities and intelligence that offer an authentic recital experience.
Based Upon works across art and design, producing a body of work where meaning, legacy and craftsmanship converge. Whether etched into a municipal artwork, a grand piano or an item of jewellery, the Based Upon signature symbolises objects which question ‘true value’ and the way it is experienced. Often recognised by rich materiality, extraordinary craftsmanship, and multi-layered narratives, Based Upon’s work offers pause for thought and moments for reflection. In private commissions, municipal artworks and creative collaborations, timeless pieces emerge characterised by profound meaning, philosophical exploration and
deeply-held values.
Led by founders, brothers Ian and Richard Abell and Alex Welch since 2004, from its studio, workshop and production facility in Greenwich, London, Based Upon has mastered epic elemental scale and astonishing intricate detail in its pieces. Clients, whether individuals or global brands, resonate as much with the philosophies and approaches behind the work, as they do with the forms and aesthetics that result. An understanding of provenance, materiality and emotional resonance allows Based Upon to communicate stories, philosophies and sacred ideas without the constraint of category. These are sculptures, spaces, functional forms and private commissions that are as they are, without the need for label. They are simply precious, so much so, that they are frequently described as priceless.
